Session Monitoring

In the modern era, we inspect and analyze security deficiencies based on the gathered forensics that forges our digital identity.

If a single cookie went missing from a cookie jar, according to modern logic, we approach the event in a systematic way.

Who has access?

When did it occur?

What are the ramifications and possible collateral?

How can we prevent a repeat?

Where do we start?

As the questions mount, a simple phenomenon paralyzes the equation. Mathematically, the left portion of the equation must equal the right side, any action has an equal and opposite reaction. The cookie phenomenon has introduced an imbalance, the left side has more questions that can be answered on the right.

The addiction to a digital solution, clouds our investigative nature. How do we proceed, when the path leads us back to the beginning? Our reluctance to reach past logs and reports has turned an aggressive tactical mission into a passive strategy. The general approach is reactive and undermines the potential for a swift solution. Typically, logs and reports are inconclusive if the context is not accurately defined.

I rambled and rambled about a simple disappearance of a cookie and introduced a situation that resembles a bowl of spaghetti. Many loops, entanglements, and knots hamper our ability to vision a straight clear solution.

Session recording allows us to dig up an old cliché, “Let’s go back to the video tape”. While there are thousands of methods to thwart security, session monitoring allows us to follow the path paved by the mischievous. Session recording is not the total solution, but a companion in the pursuit. The forensics paints a picture that is often difficult to visualize, session recording provides light where there once was a void. As a result, the new companionship of security techniques builds the union as the vision for the future.

Session recording is the set of eyes that leads us through the process defined by business policies and interpreted by IT administration. While there are many that can work without the insight, session monitoring is the partnership that sheds more light to dark situation.
